Browsers may use the Accept header to indicate supported content types. This lets you serve optimized images to minimize bandwidth and improve page load, without any changes to HTML/CSS or the images themselves. The WebP image format offers better compression and smaller file sizes and it is done with the help of HTTP Acceptheader with which 5centsCDN can determine the best image format to send the browser without a single site change. So if your Origin server supports WebP hosting then our CDN can deliver with the same image optimization.

  • According to Google, WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller in size compared to JPEG images at equivalent SSIM index. WebP supports lossless transparency (also known as alpha channel) with just 22% additional bytes. Transparency is also supported with lossy compression and typically provides 3x smaller file sizes compared to PNG when lossy compression is acceptable for the red/green/blue color channels.

Currently, only chrome and opera support WebP. If the website has a file image.jpg with the origin server supporting WebP, upon CDN delivery, chrome will recognize it as WebP, and others browser will serve as jpg. 5centsCDN will cache both WebP and jpg.
